Dr. Julie Byle is a distinguished researcher and educator in advancing science and education through innovative projects and significant grant acquisitions across Academic, Government, and Non-Profit sectors. Her expertise lies at the crossroads of systems ecology, learning sciences, and cultural ethnography. Dr. Byle's work emphasizes the value of place-based service-learning programs, which enhance ecological literacy, honor cultural knowledge, and address deficit perspectives of marginalized communities.
Dr. Byle has a robust background in designing, managing, and evaluating both formal and informal outdoor education programs. Her research includes community ethnographic studies through oral histories, as well as leading action projects and focus groups using novel methods such as photo-voice and GIS cartography. She specializes in creating culturally relevant educational programs, curricula, and evaluation tools tailored to diverse audiences.
Her passion for place-based education and environmental stewardship is evident in her dedication to historical ecology and intergenerational learning, which foster reciprocity and a sense of belonging. Dr. Byle has held significant research positions with prestigious organizations including the University of Colorado, the National Science Foundation, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She is also a certified National Geographic Educator.
Dr. Byle earned her Bachelor’s degree in Evolutionary Biology, a Master’s in STEM Educational Psychology, and a PhD in Integrative and Systems Biology and Cultural Ethnography all from the University of Colorado. Additionally, she also holds a certificate in Entrepreneurship from the Leeds School of Business.
She is an active contributor and presenter with notable organizations such as the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Children and Nature Network, The Association for Experiential Education, and the Colorado Open Space Alliance.
